TyK Calender 2010

Alexis of Thought You Knew sent me some information on their forthcoming TyK Calender for 2010. The calender features Ladies PinUps and Men's SuperHeroes as the theme and gets pretty creative as you can see from these teaser pics.

All proceeds of the sales go to support the Sadie Hawkins Style Ride via Chicago Women's Health Center. More info here.

Bike Smut: Cycle Bound Trailer

Cycle Bound Trailer -tight from rev phil on Vimeo.

I don't know what to say. I'm speechless. Along with the very NSFW video embedded above, Bikesmut.com offers this explanation:

Its been demanded and its been begged for and its been about time for us to unleash the beast that is the promotional trailer.

Our hesitation has been simple if not infuriating. This year's program has all new content that greatly expands our understanding of what was previously considered bike porn. The movies are amazing and naturally we want the trailer to be just as good. Frequently are better than their respective movies, and people go to see the movies knowing that. So we take specific shame in presenting this trailer, which, some say is great but we feel falls short on presenting the awesome bikesexual nature that is the entire program of Cycle Bound.

Cimatti Campagnolo Cambio Corsa

Harry, the man behind the NY Bike Jumble and the provider of content for Tears for Gears as of late is selling a beautiful 57cm Cimatti Campagnolo Cambio Corsa 1940's road bike on eBay. This is pure sex on two wheels. If vintage (read, 60 years old) roadies are your thing, check it out!

It ends in less than a day, so you can probably get a good deal on it! Like what you see? Check out the full gallery here!

Ed Glazar's Wedge Shot

Ed once again captures the environment of Peel Sessions. This was from the week when the Revival guys were in town filming. Great times.

Even though my foot is still broken, we're still doing Peel so roll through tonight!

WNW Opening

WNW is a community space in the heart of L.E.S. brought to the NYC cycling world by DQM, Trackstar, Livestrong and Nike. It's at Trackstar's space (the flier had me confused for a second). Tonight is the opening party, from 7-9 at 231 Eldridge.

WNW is a pop-up installation within Trackstar that works as a companion to the STAGES show. Open Weds – Saturday, 10/22-11/22, WNW is all dedicated to cycling and art in New York. It’s a place for the community to get a sense of what LIVESTRONG and the Lance Armstrong Foundation are about and to connect with people who are stoked on cycling and art.

They will be serving free coffee and donuts every morning for riders headed to work, offering free flat fixes and teaching classes on bike stuff like wheel building and headset installation. There will be weekly rides visiting all five boroughs of the city that will leave from WNW. The London to Paris film will also be screened here.

The Stages begins at Deitch on October 31st and runs through November 21st.

Arik Roper: Hidden Dimension

hdflyer3.jpg

Arik Roper is the man. His work has blessed many album covers from many many great bands over the years; Sleep and High on Fire are just a few. He's having an opening event at Fuse Gallery this weekend. Here's a few of the pieces that will be on display. I'll be there!

Brimming with delicate, surreal imagery, Arik Roper’s The Hidden Dimension examines alternate states of being that exist within and beyond everyday awareness. These realms unfold as everyday consciousness is interrupted through dreams or other capacities. Exploring these transcendent elements, Roper’s paintings and drawings feature epic landscapes of the mind, natural artifacts from the past and future and other cerebral peculiarities.

Everyone <3's Juliet

Fixed gear boys all over swoon for Juliet. She's a rad girl and leads a busy, busy life. On top of riding for Charge, her and Posy own a promoting company. In her free time, she designs shirts, rides, falls and travels.

On her recent trip to SF, she met up with Brenton Salo to shoot some pics. This one came out nice!

Bike-Opolis

It's a sad truth that with the highest density, NYC still falls behind 5 other US-cities and 2 Canadian cities in the ranking for "best to bike in". Nice design on the chart, horrible bike though!

Red Bull Illume

All you photographers out there; you may want to get in on this. The Red Bull Illume is an international photography competition focusing on extreme sports. It's not about shooting someone going the biggest, it's about shooting a beautiful photograph of something sport related.

Even though It doesn't have fixed gears or track bikes as a category, I'm sure you can find another sport to pick!

More information can be found here. There's also some amazing shots in the Gallery section.

Edit: Nick from Redbull commented that there is a category where fixed gear shots could be entered, so shoot away!

Velo Cult in the Eastern Sierras

Velo Cult in the Eastern Sierras from Velo Cult on Vimeo.

Not only does this use one of my favorite songs as the soundtrack, it features some great cinematography and the guys from Velo Cult! Love'n it. Good job guys.

From their blog:

This video is made of random clips from our post-Interbike camping trip. Some of the places we rode were Bodie, Mammoth, Bristlecone, Mono. The bikes in the video are a Bontrager cross bike, Kelly cross bike, an old Raleigh and a Mondia.

The Velo Cult wool jerseys in the video look really nice.

In Memory

I just received an email from Brad Serls regarding a friend and fellow cyclist that took his own life recently due to overwhelming depression. To help out he's selling the remaining prints from his photography show I posted about a while back and sending the proceeds to Beyond Blue, an Australian organization that raises awareness of depression.

My thoughts are with his family.

You can see the remaining prints here, at his Flickr set.

L'Eroica 2009

I cannot get enough of these photos that Camilla shot at the 2009 L'Eroica. I can only hope when I'm old and have seen many miles on the road that I can continue to pull my ass onto the saddle and log more.

Here, Valeriano Falsini, Coppi's Gregario, at 81 inspires us to be heroic.

Rip Zinger and Me

One of the days that I was healed up enough to ride, Rip Zinger set up a meeting with Nike Japan to do some shooting of me riding throughout Tokyo. I was still injured at the time and wasn't really feeling like riding, but Rip is a world-renown photographer and I couldn't pass up the opportunity!

A nice little wallride spot I found. We only got one run in at it though.

Traffic was dense in Tokyo. Comparable to NYC.

It's actually legal to ride on the sidewalk there too. Sometimes it's the only way to get to a spot.

Found a nice bank in Shibuya with a pretty steep hip. I got a nice 3 tap off it and a flared out 180 on another bank, a few blocks away.

picture by Rip Zinger, click for full-resolution

This sidewalk made a nice little hip. Perfect for blasting a 180 out of it.

Thanks so much for your time Rip! Come back to NYC and we'll hang out!

Cyclic!

I just got an email from Cyclic! In Amsterdam, telling me of an event that's springing up this weekend!

A hobby and meeting of two creatives that has got out of hand > turned exhibition event next weekend in Amsterdam.
We (Vera & Cheryl) are two biking buddies that thought a diy exhibition about cycle culture would be fun to organise for the biking community here in Amsterdam.

cyclic! is a bicycle » art » media happening celebrating cycling culture. Exhibiting bicycle inspired artwork, design, performance, film screening, styling and a meet up & ride.
One of our exhibiting artists is Mat the Horse whose work I discovered on your blog.

artists exhibiting/performing » Bitches in Control, Brent Humphreys (Project le Tour), Cafe Velo, Erosie, fotoduda, Gabriel Kousbroek, Kapitein Roodbaard (Amsterdam Fixxxed), Lovelilalee, Magieke Jansen, Matthew The Horse, Oorbeek, Vera van de Nieuwenhof, Wheels-on-Fire,Tim Ayres, Vindersloon, Zelda Beauchampet.

Patinae Peacock Groove Pista

Well. Someone went there and man, it looks nice! Peacock Groove copper-plated a track bike and components for a recent build. Once this beaut patinas a nice turquoise, it'll look so rad.

Mmmm What Have We Here?

Love this picture. But what frame is it? You'll have to head over here to find out! I met Ryan, Maceo and John this past week in Japan. Rad dudes. Drank at their bar and shot the shit. Really admire what they've got going on...

Rip Zinger New York City Exhibition

I hung out with Rip a lot in Tokyo. Such a rad dude. Always riding with his camera in hand and taking us to clubs and spots to ride. He's got an opening in Tokyo on Wednesday at the Slope Gallery.

Be sure to check it out if you're in Tokyo! Seeing these pics of NYC makes me glad to be home. Looks great Rip! Keep it up and dude, email me when you see this!

Hoarding

Velo Cult has a nice little post about hoarding saddles. There was a time a while back, where my parts bin had 20 Turbos. 10 were NOS that I bought from a shop in Washington that was selling off their inventory. The rest were various Supers, Gels, Bernard Hinaults and Bios. Over time I sold them when I needed money and now I think I'm down to 5. Now with the re-issue, I feel like I don't need to hoard them as much.

The only saddles I'm squirreling away now are the Cinelli Unicanitors and the Concors. As long as those two saddle's re-issues are far-off from matching the originals, It'll stay that way.

Many props to Velo Cult for the rad post and pics!

Feather Cycles

I met Ricky about a month ago through Nate. He was visiting from Leeds and was in NYC to ride BMX. We hung around for a bit, shot the shit and rode a popular spot in Brooklyn. Really nice guy. Kills BMX. Like to the point where you feel uncomfortable riding a silly fixed gear around him ya know? He was totally cool about it though and showed a real interest in track bikes. He even said hadn't seen people do 180's down stairs on fixed gears before.

That brought about him talking about track bikes. He said he and his friends were really into riding them and come to find out, he's got a company now. Feather Cycles just launched and he's got his first two frames posted.

Throughout the years, I've always found that the people who are humble about their work, well, usually outshine everyone. Ricky is totally that kind of person. I had no idea he was such a great welder or craftsman.

Seriously, the bikes look good man. Real good. Totally digging the head badge too. If you're interested in setting up an order, hit Ricky up here.

Dazzle Canoe

I love Dazzle camo. I got a book on old warship's camouflage a few years back and when I first saw it, I was blown away. So ill. Even though it was used on WWI warships, people have re-appropriated it to fashion, graphic design, graffiti and even architecture. This canoe was a project of Carrie Schneider. Thanks to Matt from Makergo for the heads up!

I really would like to paint a Bruiser like that. Even though Camo has been done before!

Reg Harris' Power

Track racers are monsters. Even before beasts like Boss and Hoy were old enough to ride a bike, men like Reg Harris exhibited pure power at the track. 4 world titles during his career and a post-retirement championship title in 1974 at the age of 54.

This picture shows the strength he possessed. Just look at that chain slack during his final sprint!

Icarus Dirt Track

Ian does lovely work and this is just one example. Icarus is a frame builder from Boston that has been churning out beautiful frames for a little while now. My friend Jody has had one for about a year and Ian made him those custom aero track drops not too long ago. Another NY'r, Nikola just got an S&S couplered track frame from him too!

Nice subtle detailing here. Nothing over the top. This bike rules. I'd love to rip around a grasstrack on it! I'm sure Lucian will enjoy it!

Dalek and Delta Exhibition at Elms Lesters Painting Room

Delta is by far my favorite artists. Not graffiti or street artist, just artist. I met Boris Tellegen in Amsterdam about 6 years ago. Prior to that, I had found his work in a Dutch architecture magazine. He went to industrial design school and began to explore 3D tessellations and installations.

These are some pics from his and Dalek's exhibition.

Although both artists’ work appears to have similarities with its underlying geometric themes, it is diametrically opposed “Marshall’s use of straight line and colour is all to do with the “super flat” surface and the ambiguity of the exaggerated optical perspectives, while Tellegen’s focus is on surface, texture and shadows,’ said curator Paul Jones in a recent interview with DESIGN WEEK ‘While I have exhibited both artists within larger group shows, I thought this two-man show would challenge and stimulate viewers’

Amsterdam based Boris Tellegen will be showing an impressive body of new works including canvases, collages and some new 3D sculptural wall pieces from his evolving ‘diversion’ series..

..and juxtaposed will be a selection of American artist James Marshall’s meticulous geometric paintings, including a large scale, site specific installation painted during a recent residency at the gallery.

Such amazing work!

Momentum Recap

Originally from Massachusetts, Matt W. Moore has brought his fine-tuned, self-proclaimed "Vectorfunk" style back to the state with a well rounded body of work. His signature style canvas work, a departure from the norm into watercolor and collage work, as well as a small series of prints are hanging in the gallery. In conjunction with the traditional works, Matt has come together with Open and Traitor Cycles to present a series of five hand-painted frames, a cycling cap and t-shirt. Please visit the project's micro-site for a more in-depth look and to purchase select pieces of the Momentum project.
Visit Momentum Site.

Show hangs from August 15th, 2009 to September 15th, 2009.

"The bike project and other skate/snow/surf projects are ideal. I’m working with brands I have a lot of admiration for. I’m immersed in the culture; painting a bike is native to me - I ride every day. I want people to ride these bikes, not hang them up because they‘re scared to ride them. I do plenty of work that can be only hung up. Shred this bike for 10 summers, then hang it up and say it had a life."

Matt W. Moore / Arist & Designer

"The time and effort to which Matt and Zack have put into this show speak volumes of their love for what they do. This is obvious to anyone who has stepped foot in Open or has been in the presence of Matt’s art. We hold the work done at Open Bicycle, Chorus Gallery and Matt in the highest regard and are thrilled to have been asked to be a part of this."

Joe / Traitor Cycles

"Seeing a project go from conversation to completion is always great, especially when the outcome reaches a level far beyond what we all first imagined. We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we have."

Those About to Die Salute You

Duke Riley, the artist who did my Behemoth tattoo, has an event in Flushing-Meadows, Queens this Thursday. It's not a normal "gallery" event either, it's a naval battle footfight. Duke and his minions constructed boats from the reeds in the neighboring park and will set them assail in the reflecting pool outside the Queens Museum of Art at 6:30 on the 13th of August.

Looks so epic! Good job Duke!

Duke Riley has always been interested in the space where water meets land within the urban landscape and is known for art work that is an idiosyncratic mix of performance art, sailor’s craft and historical re-enactment. Upon QMA’s invitation for an artist residency, Riley’s life-long fascination with the culture and topography of waterfronts, and proclivity for margins - of society, history, etc. - were immediately focused on the decommissioned World’s Fair Ice Rink adjacent to the museum. The sight of the vast oval arena, a sea of refrigeration tubing and white sand, brought an instant association with ancient Roman coliseums that were flooded to stage violent naval battles or Naumachia for the delight of spectators in the Empire’s effort to distract the masses from societal collapse by indulging them with free bread and extravagant spectacle.

Seen on the Street: NYC Bikes and Riders

Sasha has an ongoing series entitled Seen on the Street: NYC Bikes and Riders. It's a great little set he's been compiling over the past few months; candid bicycle photographs and the people who ride them. This one in particular stuck out tonight. Full spandex, sneakers and no helmet on a GT Pulse. Really amazing shot and I figured with all the female T&A floating around on the blogs lately (just playing Zack!), maybe the female readers would like to see some boy butt. Albeit spandex butt.

Zebra-Striped MKE Bruiser

When I said "Yes, Milwaukee can really do any kinda paint you want" some people took it to heart. Case in point... Insanity. Look at that fork! So nuts! I wanna see a Gravedigger Bruiser!

Man, that pearl clear coat is pretty too. Check out some more shots at MKE's Flickr.

The OX from LifeInABox Productions on Vimeo.

Life In A Box created this video for Boston, MA-based Independent Fabrications recently. Watch as the guys from IF talk about the design and birth of this bad ass street bike. Lookin good guys! IF always makes the nicest bikes.

Alpe d'Huez Brooks Saddle

I don't usually get into the whole custom saddle thing. Mostly because I tend to ruin saddles all the time and why spend a lot of money on some "limited" art piece only to trash it in a few months?

I will however say the design intent behind these custom Brooks saddles is really nice. If you watch the Tour every year, then you've obviously heard of The Alpe d'Huez. It's been a stage finish of the tour since '76. Back when the tour was ridden on steel bikes and no one even knew what carbon fiber was, the racers were all riding Brooks saddles.

Now that time has passed, but Brooks commemorates those racers by collaborating with a wallpaper artist. Dan Funderburgh is an artist from Brooklyn and he used the topography map from the Alpe d'Huez for the design. Dan loves bicycles and I'm sure he was stoked to have Brooks approach him.

Tom Sachs Tequila Bike for Lance

I know these bikes have been posted all over the net, but Tom Sachs' bike is the winner in my book. It had a case of Tequila on a Cetma rack and a spout to pour shots. The Cutters and yes, Lance all got wasted at the private party in Paris. Eventually, they all got kicked out of the party.

The bike looks good and all, but the zinger is in the details. Mr. Sachs took a dremmel and scraped away all the "SRAM" labels and wrote "Campagnolo" beside it. Pretty funny.

Saglife AF1 Questa

Chari and Co just got in the new SAG collaboration with the artist Questa.

I wonder if SAG is going to make the Mash bag a standard model now? I love mine. Been wearing it everyday since Mike hooked it up!

MWM for OPEN

Check out what MWM just submitted to Open for their installation entitled Momentum at the Chorus Gallery!

MWM is on a roll at the moment - Wired loves his work and did you see his custom Mini Cooper? He continues to push his graphic look onto new forms. Take his upcoming show at Open’s Chorus Gallery, “Momentum,” which explores his graphics against a series of Traitor track bicycle frames. “In part with Open and Traitor Cycles, Matt will be presenting a series of five hand-painted frames, a cycling cap and some other soft goods. In conjunction with the frames, Matt will be hanging some of his signature canvas work.” We’re fans.

Read up at Selectism.

Cursed Scrolls

This Thursday between 7-10pm at 350 Broadway in Brooklyn, Mishka will be hosting a gallery event entitled Cursed Scrolls. They will be showcasing French's work. I've been a fan of French for some time now and when I found out he was doing some shirts for Mishka, I was pumped. I can't wait to catch this.

French_Tee1.jpg

This shirt will also be available at the event and I'm sure it'll sell out quickly.

See ya there!

Hellyer Velodramatic

Yeah, I know it's a bit old, but I just came across these pics from Hellyer Velodrome over at Velodramatic. Make sure you browse through this site. A ton of great content.

Edit: just realized this pic isn't from the Hellyer post, but I'm still keeping it because it rules!

Chris Piascik at the Chorus Gallery

My friend Chris had a gallery show at the Chorus Gallery in Boston recently. His work is consists of an interesting play with typography and character illustration.

Tony Luong shot this image with 4x5. For more pics of Chris' custom painted SBC 125R Cruiser, head over to his Flickr.

Squarebuilt Process

Little Andrew Temkin has been interning for Lance at Squarebuilt for a few weeks now. Great experience for a young kid to get I'm sure. He's got a ton of pictures up on his Flickr of Lance working on Bad Heather's (sorry Heather, I had to) new frame.

Great shots! I'll post the finished product when it's done!

Machine with Roller Chain - Arthur Ganson

Arthur Ganson is known for his kinetic sculptures and machines. At moments even a cold metallic machine can appear to be organic and chaotic. This is one of those moments.

Thanks for the link Zack!

Crab cakes and Natty Bo aren't the only two signature goods to come outta Baltimore. Bishop is a frame builder that is churning out some real beauties. I love this wishbone seat stay. Gorgeous. Check out more information here and more beauties here!

Tyler Tucked

Not sure who shot this picture, but that isn't stopping me from posting it. My guess it was taken at the last Future Tense in Seattle. Zach told me they got a few boxes and kickers for the competition and it looks like Tyler's laying it down proper. Nice shot! Who's the photographer, lemme link your site!

Edit: Volare_Ism took the shot!

Wall Ride by Ed Glazar

Ed Glazar and I met up in Greenpoint tonight to shoot this wall ride spot. I hit it at least 50 times and I'm in pain. He liked this one the best. The sky and composition is fucking great, but we all knew Ed was the man already!

Munich 1972

I always loved the Olympic symbol for cycling. Tracko has a version of it in his logo and this old stamp from the 1972 Olympics looks rad as hell.

Kinda random, but I was always really really interested in projection-based installations on architectural facades. This project in particular is really well done. Perfect use of the fenestration and the masonry.

Thanks for the heads up Chris!

The Revival Keep on Keepin' On

THE REVIVAL/KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON from morehartfilms on Vimeo.

Mr. Briggs from Skitch just sent me an email with the new Revival trailer linked. Check out what Tom has to say about it!

Due to the trip being cancelled last month Wayne has taken it upon himself to create a short precurser video to the main video project. Basically the short video will be out in November and is title The Revival presents Keep On Keepin' On. The project focuses on Seattle and Vancouver while the main Revival video that will be out early next year will be more broad and include both west coast and east coast riders. We were really bumbed about having to cancel the trip last month so suddenly and felt that it would be good if we put out something sooner rather than later and that's where Keep On Keepin' On came from.

Lookin good guys! Tyler, you're a fucking maniac. MANIAC!

Jonathan Williams: Biker Tribes

The Times (London Times) asked Jonathan Williams to illustrate the different biker tribes in their city. Here are my favs:

Above

The Urban Speedster

Clive has a pink, all-in-one lycra leotard, and doesn't see why he ought to be ashamed about that. His bicycle cost many thousands of pounds, and is made of the same sort of stuff as badminton racquets. Clive rides his bicycle every day but, at the weekend, instead of cycling at high speed to his job in the City, he'll cycle at high speed to a bicycle shop. Here, he will spend many more thousands of pounds having bits removed from his bicycle, and replaced by other bits that are almost, but not entirely, exactly the same. Clive's bicycle lives in the living room, in front of the television. He has no wife.

The Sit up and Beg Biker

They don't go very fast, these bikes, but Emily didn't buy hers to get around quickly. She bought it because she liked the leather saddle, and the pretty basket. At first, she used to cycle around staring at the clouds, but the dentist won't let her do that any more. Emily's boyfriend constantly nags her about cycling in ballet pumps, and says she ought to wear some neon lycra. Emily always smiles, sweetly, but she's quite happy in her muted flowing asymmetrical skirts. Although her hems do get caught in the chain.

Where is the fixed gear rider illustration? Just this:

The Fakenger
Lee actually does IT for a small accountancy firm in Fitzrovia, but you would never guess that if you spotted him cycling to work from his home in Hackney. In his camouflage shorts and his cut-off tights, with his bag strapped up high on his back and his special shoes that don’t let him take his feet off the pedals, ever, he’s a dead ringer for a bona fide cycle courier. His bike has no gears and no brakes, and is festooned with tatty bits of string and masking tape. When Lee sees a bicycle with wheels that are thinner than his own it sends him into a powerful rage. He’d be a real cycle courier if he didn’t get lost so much.

Cheers...

MVRDV on Deutsche Welle TV

There are moments in your professional career where you encounter pure inspiration. For me, this came in the form of the Dutch firm MVRDV's work. When I was in Holland 5 years ago, I rode across the country visiting all of their completed work. Coming out of school and seeing design-intensive, theoretical work actually built, not just talked about was just what I needed to push myself.

Check out this interview with the Dutch Architects as Deutsche Welle TV chats with directors Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and the owners of the Didden Village house, and mentions of the works Westerdokeiland, Rotterdam Market Hall, Parkrand and others.

He made this for me, both in digital and stencil form and I am beside myself. Unfortunately, it's a little too NSFW to be the banner for the site. But thanks Chris!

Duke Riley :: Artist + Patriot

Riley_Monster.jpg

Speaking of sea beasties, I had my last session with Duke Riley at East River Tattoo last night. He finished my behemoth and it looks phenomenal. There really isn't a better artist for this job. I think it was this piece that got me excited to work with him.

Growing up on the coast of NC and surfing the OBX and hurricane swells, you have to have heard of the sandbars littering the coast referred to as the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic'. These sandbars used to wreck ships and still to this day, can be a treacherous area to navigate. Sailors used to tell tall tales of giant beasts that devoured ships whole and killed the crew.

Well, this is inspired from such a beast. I found an old sailing chart from the 15th century and used that as a precedent. Duke's handy-work did the rest!

This City Can't Swallow Me

Matt Lingo is a photographer living and working in LA. He's spent a lot of time documenting the local fixed gear scene in San Diego and has just compiled and finished a book entitled This City Can't Swallow Me.

Here's his description of the project:

"A fixed gear bicycle is a bike with a cog that doesn't have a freewheel mechanism meaning as long as the back wheel is moving, the pedals are moving. Although traditionally used strictly on a velodrome track, more and more riders are choosing these brakeless bikes for use on the road. They have a unique style of riding through traffic that I've tried to capture in this body of work."

Fixed Fiend

I have to thank my dear friend Joel, aka Lamour Supreme, for this belated birthday present. When he said "I have something for you", I suspected it'd be some limited edition toy he splooged on worth millions in Japan. When I saw him 2 weeks ago, he brought out a portfolio and handed me a piece of paper.

It's the original Demon On A Track drawing!!!!

I just got a frame for it and am beyond stoked. This is the best birthday present anyone's ever given me. So bad ass man!

THANK YOU!

Alsop Chips

rendering and reality

A reader forwarded me this project by Alsop Architecture. They said it was 'right up my alley' and they were very right. When I first saw it, I immediately thought it was an MVRDV project. I was wrong obviously. Hell, I even thought it was a Dutch project. Wrong again. This 8-story project was just completed in Manchester.

The parti model of stacking blocks is very much a dutch approach to architecture. In fact, I'm not ruling out that Alsop used MVRDV as a precedent of sorts for it. The project is entitled Chips and consists of "3 fat chips stacked on top of each other". While most projects relate to the context via vernacular stylings, Chips relates through the use of super graphics.

Each mass has text on it that relates to its surrounding neighborhood.

Pretty rad! Head over to Alsop to see more images.

FGLDN & 14 Bike Co Frame by Ted James

I know it's already been posted everywhere, but there's something I want to emphasize here...

Look, everyone is into this new cool thing called fixed gears and it seems like in the past few months, we're seeing more and more people express their love for it in various ways. Some people blog, some photograph, some videotape, some write articles, some build, some create and some market. It's really great and we need to support this! Hell, if you have an idea, run with it!

This project is the by-product of real man hours. That man is "Super" Ted James. I've yet to meet Ted, but one day I'd hope to. As always, I extend a welcoming hand to NYC anytime Ted!

14 Bike Co is a recently opened shop in London. Super Ted is building 14 bikes for the shops 14 riders. Those chain gang guys and gals are slowly receiving their frames at the mo' [how's that for vernacular slang?] and even though that's not the final fork [in fact, that's an aftermarket fork], Ted's busy designing and cranking away at these bikes. You can see more pictures here and follow their updates here, at their blog.

Ted, FGLDN and 14 Bike Co, I commend you. GREAT JOB!

Kenny Scharf Does it Right

Kenny Scharf's graphics on the Livestrong series Trek TTX has gotta be one of the best collaborative bike frames to date. Something about it reminds me of the old World Industries graphics. Ying and Yang, water vs. fire, etc. I refuse to post the Shepard Fairey one. It's hideous.

Corbusier and the Occult

t1_n145_a2_modulor.jpg

When I was in high school, I did a report on DC's urban plan for my AP US History class. After I began researching, I discovered the theory of Masonic influence with the city plan of the District of Columbia. Pentagrams, right angles, the occult...

This was one of the reasons that Architecture school appealed to me and while in my first semester, I began to admire Le Corbusier's work. There's no mistaken the influence his designs have had on my understanding and execution of architecture. But was Corbusier influenced by the occult as well?

511cdTueC7L._SS500_.jpg

A new book by J. K. Birksted entitled, Corbusier and the Occult delves into this notion...

Read below:

"Hidden sources and ambiguous inspirations abound in the work of famous, highly influential architect Le Corbusier, who reinvented himself in his thirties, mythologizing much of his history. This book takes a robust, unblinking look at the blanks in need of filling, covering "as much about the secret sources of Le Corbusier's architecture-that is, of what he threw away and did not want us to know-as it is about modernist relations to history." As a child, Le Courbusier (then Charles-Édouard Jeanneret) was immersed in Masonic thought (a big part of social life in his Swiss hometown), which elevates the right angle as a symbol of righteousness and life. Le Corbusier's inspiration by, and celebration of, the right angle is a major theme; he referred to his own Poem of the Right Angle representing "not only the foundation of my being but also... of my architecture and of my art." UK scholar Birksted unpacks a wide range of philosophical and aesthetic meanings resonating through Le Courbusier's work. Though it deepens the scholarship considerably, the exhaustive study's meandering narrative makes the material more than a little confusing. Still, the bold connections he makes should hold the interest of art and architecture fans."

Mike Giant and Cinelli

Really feeling this Mike Giant piece. Cinelli offered to trade him a Supercorsa Pist for a drawing. After he sent it into them, they liked it so much, they decided to release it as a limited-edition poster. Nice work man!

David Perez Shadi, aka Kai's pops has a great post over at his blog, Staring Down the Barrell of a Gun on the OG messenger days in NYC.

Here are two of the many pics from the post. I'm not going to copy the text from it because you should go over and read it for yourself.

Sliding House

Wallpaper magazine, the source for high-end design, has a video up showcasing a man and his wife's dream home. The house slides open within minutes, exposing large spans of glass and the beautiful summer sky.

Really great design. Sensible nods to the vernacular without compromising the modern, high tech nature of such an idea.

The cinematography reminds me of something KDlab would have done years ago, but in rendered form.

I am beside myself at the moment. Literally. I have no words. My friend Nick James was teasing me a few weeks ago about making a comic about me. I thought he was kidding. Then he showed me a sample... He's done great work before that I've posted, but I've never seen anything like this!

Cellular Walls

3328201503_cbedd4f757.jpg

I've been looking into more and more modern-day track builds as of recently. It seems like a level of precision and craft has been achieved as of late due to the growing trend in track bikes. It makes you wonder, would these guys be pushing the aesthetic envelope like this if track bikes weren't so popular? This track end reminds me of a cell wall found in plant cells. Nicely done.

Vanilla kills it with their Speedvagen bikes.

Mongolion

Joel is the man. I met him through the NYC Fixed Gear scene after seeing his artwork everywhere. Eventually I introduced him to Mike and Greg at Mishka and since then, he's done literally oodles of projects with them. From a giant Cyco Simon head, to a Boogieman and now he's showcasing his latest design at their retail shop this Friday at 7pm.

The Mongolion has been posted here before and here's its final incarnation. Pretty impressive man!

I cannot imagine the amount of work that went into this model. It took two brothers 9 years to construct and the level of detail is maddening. This particular scene is relevant. Even the stance of the fallen rider was planned.

MB-1

pics by Miha Matei

My good friend Devotion just finished up his first frame. The complete bike is stunning and definitely a noble steed worthy of his already insane stable. All of his builds seem effortless and completely comfortable. Read below as he describes what went into this work of art...

MB1_1.jpg

The build of the bike was very much inspired by British "club racers" and "all-rounders" of the 50's and 60's. Being my first frame, I liked the idea that a single bike could be built to be ridden with a number of intentions. British racers used to ride geared/fendered bikes to the track, often carrying a spare set of track wheels on fork mounted "sprint carriers" and then convert it to a "path racer"...only to re-install the fenders, brakes and other bits before heading home.

Knowing that I will never part with this first frame, I wanted a versatile build that I could set up in a number of ways for the rest of my life. The clamp-ons and 120mm rear spacing mean I can set it up as a fixed-gear, 5 or 10 speed with relative ease. Truth be told, I just wanted an excuse to gather all of the cool old Campy bits. While it does have fender clearance, it's more of a vintage racing bike (traditional racing geometry of 73 degrees parallel) than a vintage rando bike.

Wanna see more? Check out his gallery here.

Dazzle

sdfvasdvdfgv.jpg

I've posted about Razzle camouflage multiple times in the past; 1,2 and 3 previous posts.

Now the RISD Fleet Library has an exhibition and lecture series on the WWI camouflage.

bfgnjhmtk.jpg

"Razzle dazzle" was a form of camouflage used by the US and UK during WWI. Its intent was to cause miscalculation in estimation of the ship's speed and direction. The visual rangefinders of the time were easily fooled by the contrasting and overlapping geometric patterns. The markings of such camouflage have since then made their way into different forms of artistic expression. Now I'm not sure that artists pulled from 'razzle dazzle' as a form of precedent, but the similarity is striking. Here is a beautiful image of such camouflage patterns. Unfortunately, there were no color images of these war ships.

Koolhand

rem1.jpg

Rem Koolhaas, the Dutch mastermind behind Office For Metropolitan Architecture has influenced many architecture students and practicioners over the years. He's the driving force behind internationally acclaimed masterpieces like the CCTV building, the Seattle Public Library and the Porto Concert Hall.

Now he's inspired a typeface. FWIS used Koohaas' Miesian typologies to create a typeface that's more representative of his work, rather than a usable type.

"‘koolhand’ is a new type face which takes its form from the architectural works of rem koolhaas.
the typeface is designed by fwis and art directed by chris papasadero. he is aiming to design a font
a day for the month of january and is posting them on his website. while the letters in ‘koolhand’
aren’t really designed for legibility, papasadero envisions them for textural treatments. "

Pure Norwegian Box Architecture

evfqewrbwrtnrht.jpg

Hailing from Oslo, Norway, Rintala Eggertsson Architects created this 19 square meter house. It is essentially living stripped to the minimal requirements. Smart living. Programmed living. The reason this project strikes me as beautiful is mostly because of the material choices. The exterior looks like Leviathan out of the Hellraiser movies and yet the inside is clad with a nice warm wood. The structure is also framed from wood.

dcveqve.jpg

Typically in the US and other countries when Architects create minimal dwellings such as this, the cold and harsh materials will continue to the interior, resulting in a house that feels more like a prison than a warm and welcoming home.

First seen at Dezeen and then redirected to Rintala Eggersson's homepage.

It came from another world!

Gaganho Home

family_house_by_Pedro_Gadanho_yatzer11.jpg

Fabrik Project just posted this project by the Portuguese architect Pedro Gaganho. I've seen Pedro's work before and his use of heavy geometric shapes is often at the building-scale. Some would think such a design approach would be clunky and out of place in a smaller space scaled for the everyday, but I think this is perfection. The proportions are scaled down in such a way that the geometries pull the occupant into the various programmed spaces.

Not just anyone could pull this off!

2859861616_020b6becf5.jpg

Sexy as hell and a bit pricey for NOS and used they fetch upwards of $200 USD. Even though it's vastly inferior to today's threadless stems in terms of stiffness, the old school track nuts go bonkers over them.

Eventually they just made varying lengths, as evident in my old Titan bar / stem combo that was on my Higgins.

Union Square

Jose, the man Martinez is finally back in NYC after traveling around documenting drift-car sporting events. He was out recently in Union Square shooting pics of the usual night riders, Alex and Mano.

Great shots dude! Alex and Mano, where you been mates?

Stainless steel madness!

Argonaut's a frame builder out of Portland. I have to say, this is some of the most beautiful work I've seen in a long, long time. Just check out Drew's custom!

Great work. Keep it up!

World Champ Bearbrick

Wood Wood, home of the browser-expanding website and crazy flash animations teamed up with Medicom Toy Corporation to design a World-Champion Striped Bearbrick.

I'll buy it.

Squarebuilt Update

Headbadge.jpg

Brooklyn-based Squarebuilt has launched their website. After flipping through Lance's blog posts, I came across these pics. This is what it's all about. A bike bred from fire and is just pure evil. Dark Horse indeed dude!

I can't wait to see what Lance comes up with next! Great job man!

Stealth

Cannondale_Stealth.jpg

Cannondale designed a stealthy new concept bike and then fucked it up by putting flat bars on it. Integrated flat bars at that.

Honestly, how are you going to break the sound barrier on flat bars?

Where's the integrated monocoque Cetma rack? How am I going to carry a 12 pack of Budweiser on this thing? Sheesh.

Ok, it looks really cool and is entirely monocoque, including the chain and seat stays. Cannondale claims that it won't go into production at the moment, but that elements from it will appear in future Cannondale models.

Ben Ingham for Rapha

rapha-photography-prints-2008-front.jpg

Photographer Ben Ingham took a series of photographs for cycling wear company Rapha recently in the Swiss Alps. Out of all the shots, this one captures the spirit of cycling. It's timeless.

The photographs are silver gelatin archival prints and were printed in limited quantities.

Naked Bike Chicks

2890303801_fcd9b225d2.jpg

All you bike nerds, get your nerdom on. Is that a word? Nerdom? Anyway, the lovely Minx has alerted me that the Team Pegasus calender is done.

Be sure to select either the SFW or NSFW version.

What's the deal with all the nakedness in calenders lately? Shitty economy + visual stimuli of the nude female variety = happy people?

Whatever it is, it must be working.

The Best Craigslist Post Ever

I won't say anything... just read it here.

I've also copied the text and took a screen shot here on my Flickr. I really want to have a beer with that dude.

Tel Aviv Port: Epic Pittedness

tel-aviv-port-by-mayslits-kassif-architects-main-image.jpg

Mayslits Kassif Architect's have made what looks like an epic place to ride a bike or a skateboard. Surface articulation with regards to urban plazas is something the rest of the modern world seems to do so well. American building codes and clientele seem to keep landscape, building and urban designers on the flat z-axis, which is unfortunate.

The Tel Aviv Port looks like an awesome plaza. Great job.

Falcon Again

gET7HZN03gcu7b4xHoUupshko1_500.jpg

Having photographer's blogs and Flickr feeds on my RSS reader is always a good way to brighten up the day. As of now I have SexySushi's, Kyoichi's, Falcon Duran's and Ed Glazar's on my Google Reader.

Once and a while a pic of myself pops up in the mix. Love the NYC randomness on Falcon's pics, the environment and composition of Ed's, the new bike gear and even food on Kyoichi's and the new tricksters in Japan on Sexy Sushi's.

Keep it up guys!

Mishka 2009 Calender NSFW

calendarpromo1.jpg

Sorry for the NSFW image but this is worth posting...

Mishka has just dropped both our jaws and a new calender on their Bloglin.

They teamed up with Ellen Stagg once again to shoot a pretty hot calender.

They offer the calender for $30 by itself, or you can get a shirt with it for $50. Not bad.

Campy Coke Spoon

Lever_1.jpg

Devotion is a maniac. He is the most bicyentric person I know and this is just the tip of the iceberg. In the tradition of modifying 1960's Campagnolo downtube shifters, he has re-shaped these with a slight bend, that in his words "Kinda looks like a 70's coke spoon".

Well done my friend.

WSDIA Renewed!

Jonathan at WeShouldDoItAll is a hustler. I met him 4 years ago here in NYC and he was just starting his own company. Fast forward to the present and WSDIA is a well-known design firm. They just re-upped their site so if you're never been, now's your chance to be introduced to their award-winning work!

French

white-knight.jpg

I've been a fan of Richard 'French' Sayer for some time now and read his blog whenever he's posting consistently. His work is inspired by metal and the darkness that surrounds the genre. The Goat of Hades piece and the White Knight are my two favorites. I always mean to pick up a shirt or a print of his when they're for sale but I always forget to before they sell out.

Now there's a new outlet to pick up his work. Vetika has a ton of French prints and shirts. Head on over and give them a look.

LOOK Mondrian

3013040671_f146663f71.jpg

Dave's a lucky guy. Not only does his family have a long, long history in cycling, but he also has a sick bike work station at his architecture office. He was building it up for a family member and the end product is gorgeous! That's a pretty awesome rug I might add as well.

This LOOK Mondrian road frame equipped with Campagnolo SUPER Record 11 is a roadie's wet dream. These frames are so beautiful and I'm sure the test ride Dave took it on today was worth while!

Herculouse

Elmer Presslee has created some insane art pieces in the past. His work stands heads above the rest and this new piece is no different.

Check out Herculouse, his newest sculpture.

Hans Wagner Chairs

CH07_group.jpg

House of Copenhagen has re-issued one of my favorite chairs in Architectural / Furniture Design history, "the Shell Chair". Unfortunately, It's way out of my price range. Read up below.

Carl Hansen & Son, the world's leading maker of furniture designed by Hans J. Wegner, celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 28th, 2008

Hans J. Wegner CH07 Limited Edition

Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1964, "The Shell Chair" is one of Wegner's most iconic pieces. Sometimes referred to as "The Smiling Chair", CH07 is renowned for both its lasting good looks and its generous comfort. This limited anniversary edition is crafted from exclusive xebrano veneer (a first for the CH07) and upholstered in Elegance Special Brown leather, a supple aniline specially chosen for its rich color and soft texture.

Fyxomatosis x Ed Fox

delta.jpg

Andy, my red-bearded brethren from down under, sent me this photo and it made my day. True bike porn. C-Record Delta brakes are some of the sexiest bicycle components ever made. Form and function [arguable in some camps] conquer all!

Thanks Andy, once again, you deliver!

William Roberts

roberts.jpg

These pieces by British artist William Roberts (No, not Rick Ross, different artist) just struck me as note-worthy. The one on the left is entitled Combat, 1915 and on the right is Les Routiers, 1931. Roberts being a Cubist often distorted figures into complex compositions. These two pieces are so similar that they made me think of how everyday as cyclists, we're in combat with other elements.

Wear your helmet and be safe out there.

Mobius

racks.jpg

Anna Telcs and I worked on a submission for NYC's competition to design new bicycle racks for the City.

The design intent was to create two racks in one, eliminating the dead zones created by staggering bicycles. We were also going for a less-expensive, easy to produce and install approach, which many designs lacked.

I know we didn't win, but I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Streetwear

NJ.jpg

Nick James is not only one of the most dapper lads I know, but his artwork is always impressing me. Check out this piece he just completed. Entitled "Streetwear"... I felt it was relevant to the recent post regarding Pharrell
