I'm sitting here, drenched in my own sweat from a ride here in Sydney, with my GSC bottles filled with ice, resting on my back, so this image from Tracko is quite fitting. It's Merkcx Mondays (Tuesday Australia time) and there's more below!

I'm heading to the airport here shortly, so let's make this quick! This illustration by Wesley Merritt was too good to not post. Merckx was notorious for measuring his saddle height and angle before each race. He even went as far to carry a small measuring tape in his pocket.

Thanks to Kyle from d'emploi for supplying me with some Merckx Mondays cover photo content. I love how the cup overfloweth sometimes when it comes to Merckx Mondays. First, Velo Orange gave it a shout-out last week, then I sold my MX-Leader, which is now built up in Boston and the current owner shared with me this article...

This week's Merckx Mondays content is a little on the thin side but it's still packed with some great bikes. To go with the livery of the first one, here's a photo of Eddy in his Faema kit.

One of the down-sides of doing Merckx Mondays is having to wait a whole week to post up rad designs like the latest from Life Behind Bars. So good huh?

A lot happened in the Merckxiverse last week, starting with Tuesday's announcement that Nicolas Sarkozy is promoting Eddy Merckx to Commandeur of the Legion of Honour. About time huh? That's the highest possible Legion of Honour grade the French bestow upon individuals. That was first up on the radar and then Ten Speed Hero dropped a series of posts on their newest addition to the stable, starting with a study of the flat-crown Eddy Merckx fork.

Andrew from Copenhagen was kind enough to share with me his new favorite brew. Man, I wish they had this stuff in the states!

Today doesn't feel like a Monday. Usually on Mondays, I don't get the chance to ride because I'm so busy but today I was out on the bike for a few hours. When my drive-side BB cup came loose, I found myself doing some emergency work with my bike flipped upside down on the side of the road. After I got the cups somewhat tight (damn Italian threaded shells!), I admired the MXL / MAX bb lug. It's massive. No wonder Merckx loved MX-L so much.
Thanks to Jordan from Velo Champ for sharing this photo. See more photos at Eroica Cicli and more Merckx Mondays below!

I feel like these Litespeed-built Eddy Merckx road bikes have been popping up all over the place as of late. While I was at the Mellow Swap on Saturday, I ran into Gideon and took a few photos of his road bike. I love it when people ride the piss out of their vintage frames and he's been putting in miles on this thing all over the hills of Austin.

Don't worry, that's not mine. It has however been featured here before on this blog. My friend Justin Petro loaned it to Tony so that we could go on a nice hill ride while he was in town. I never really got the chance to shoot photos of it so the other night when he brought it to a party, I grabbed a few detail shots for today's post.

Hey, wait a second. That looks familiar! But what's up with all that cable housing? My buddy Chris is a collector of Beautiful Bicycles and when he acquired Kyle from D'Emploi's Eddy Merckx Century, I knew he had one thing in mind: matching bikes. Yesterday at the NACCC, I had a chance to photograph this lovely bike and it's perfect for a Merckx Mondays!

I swear, putting a modern group on a bike that previously had 8-speed Dura Ace STi on it is like getting a brand new machine. I loved the "period correctness" of the last build but man, riding 52/46 with an 11-24t cassette up 5,000+ feet of elevation sucks! So when I came across a deal on my Phil Wood road wheels, SRAM Force shifters and RED Black cranks, I pounced. I really, really, needed to upgrade. But didn't Merckx once say, "don't buy upgrades, ride upgrades"? Or something to that effect.

I love it when Andy from Fyxomatosis decides to do a Merckx Mondays collaboration with me. Andy's known for his great photos, which are superb but what I'm more impressed with is his ability to acquire such rare steeds. Case in point: Patrick Sercu's MX-Leader clad in the colors of the Belgium flag.

You've probably seen this photo of Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil before but the significance is often overlooked. Anquetil was the first cyclist to win the Tour five times and Merckx would soon follow in his footsteps.

Well, the Tour is over and the Aussie Cadel Evans took home the jersey. It was a great year for the Tour and every stage had its ups and downs. Eddy, as per the usual, made a few cameos this year. When you look at him now, it's easy to forget that in 1969, Merckx dominated the Tour de France where he won seven stages and grabbed the Yellow, Points, Mountains and Young Rider jerseys!

How about a little Reader's Rides / Merckx Mondays mashup today? Arthur Arcinas send me in photos of his Eddy Merckx Panasonic Corsa Extra a few weeks back and I'm finally getting around to posting them up. The Panasonic team paint job is one of the best to ever leave the Merckx factory. In my opinion, it's third, next to the Telekom and Stuttgart paint schemes. Arthur built his up with a Chorus and Record mix, complete with Ventos and a Rolls saddle.
Edit: So it's not a Panasonic but it's still a clean build!

It occurred to me the other day that I never really had a proper photoshoot with my Eddy Merckx team Stuttgart track bike. Sure, Sasha did a great job with the initial photos but so much has changed since then. This bike has taken me all over NYC and Austin in style and it's my favorite bike I've ever owned. While the build isn't exactly period correct, it's got style and the fit is perfect. The bar tape is worn, there are numerous chips in the paint but it still rides like lightning.
So check out more details from my Eddy Merckx track bike and other bikes from around the globe below!

There was once a noble man named Eddy Merckx. This Belgian cyclist won pretty much every race he entered (ok that's a stretch) and broke the hour record in Mexico. For years to come, he developed tubing with Columbus and sponsored some of the top teams in the 1980's and 90's racing circuits.
So what happened to Merckx in 2011? He fucked up. Real bad. Check out more of this depressing Merckx Mondays below!
