Specialized: 74 Gloves

Screen shot 2012-02-07 at 3.55.53 PM.png

I was in a bike shop today, picking up some gear for my forthcoming ride with Dan and Andy when I saw these new Specialized gloves hanging in the display. As part of their 74 line, Specialized developed some rather classy 74 Pittards leather gloves. At first glance, it looks like they hit a decent pricepoint without sacrificing quality or function. Add these to the list of must-have gloves, alongside Giro and Rapha's offerings.

Finally, the industry is returning to the nostalgic past of cycling and making products that doesn't look like club dorkwear. But don't forget who started the push. I'm going to pick a pair of each up and do a showdown of sorts in the coming months. Has anyone bought a pair of these yet? They looked damn nice in the shop.

The Bike Valet

BikeValet-02.jpg

BikeValet-01.jpg

The Bike Valet takes a nod from the notion that bike storage doesn't have to be strictly utilitarian. Design can be found even in the most mundane places. Here's what the kick-starter campaign says:

"Storage for us, like many, is a problem. We live in a small downtown apartment, and if we happen to be dense enough to leave our bikes outside they wouldn't last more than a few days, even with the priciest lock around. We lost a beautiful, vintage, hand-made Kleine in just such a way a couple years ago. So we bring our bikes inside. Given our storage issues, this makes navigating the entry hall difficult. I personally have tripped over or snagged a pair of dress pants on an awkwardly placed bicycle more than once. The solution?

The Bike Valet. It is made from 1/8" cold steel initially designed in Sketchup and later transferred to CAD. Its elegant shape is cut using a laser cutter. It is heated and bent by hand to the appropriate spec's and then powder coated for a durable long-lasting finish in red, blue, black, cream white, pale green or grey. You have your choice of either a leather or neoprene pad to rest your bike on. We think any combo of the six colors and two pads looks pretty spectacular! "

They have 66 hours to go to reach their goal of $10,000 and are only $600 away. If you're into this, head over to the Kick-Starter page.

Tokyo Fixed Gear: Ripper Tee in Stock

RIPPER.jpg

As far are skateboarding-inspired "flips" are concerned, the Tokyo Fixed Gear Ripper shirt is by far my favorite to date. Check out this and other new tees at TFG. Don't miss the Crest tee as well. Maybe that's more up the minimalist's alley.

Chari & Co: Navy SSCY Bandolier Bag

DSC_04881.jpg

Speaking of NYC brands, Chari teamed up with SSCY on a limited run of their popular Bandolier Bag:

"Nothing excites us more than innovation. At Chari & Co. NYC, we love companies and designers that push the limits, daring to come up with products that are both truly unique and highly functional. So, when the geniuses at SSCY asked us to collaborate with them on a Chari & Co. NYC-branded version of their Bandolier bag, we jumped at the opportunity. In our humble opinion, the Bandolier is the epitome of good ol’ American ingenuity. It’s a double-pouched, made-in-Brooklyn carryall that is perfect for those days on which a hip bag is too dinky but a messenger bag is too bulky. It’s extremely low-profile so you can wear it under a shell or jacket, and it’s perfect for hauling your board to the nearest skate spot. Best of all, it’s extremely easy to access either of the Bandolier’s pouches on the fly—just swing the bag around your body."

Pick one up here.

Outlier: Soft Core Rain Shirt

Outlier-soft_core.jpg

I sure could use this here in Sydney this week. It's been raining relentlessly. Outlier announced their new Soft Core Rain Shirt:

"It's only fitting that our first product release of 2012 is an Outlier Experiment; after all, experimenting is what we do best. The Soft Core Rain Shirt is like wearing a warm, expensive hug. We took everything we loved about our Soft Core Wool Vest and Supermarine® Rain Shirt and combined them, creating the look of a tailored dress shirt with the warmth of a jacket. When we finally checked the books the shirt came out to a pretty penny, but it felt so good we made a few anyway.

The Superfine Merino wool on the inside is a next-to-skin dream, the Primaloft Infinity insulation is warm yet breathable and doesn't migrate or bunch, and the highly water resistant cotton shirting outer keeps that cold winter wetness at bay. Add our patent-pending Pivot Sleeve construction to the mix and you've got Outlier's unmistakable freedom of movement."

Product Review: Volume Generator

IMG_5547.jpg

When Volume first started buzzing about their commuter bike, the Generator, it was a whole different beast. They started out by putting an 8-speed Alfine hub on one of their fixed freestyle frames but knew they had to put more thought into it before pushing it through to production. By replacing the calipers with disk brakes and running internal routing, the Generator quickly became an all-purpose, curb-hopping, around town, bar and cafe bike for people who want a little more fun in their morning commute. I got my hands on one a few weeks back and have been enjoying the ride so far.

Check out more below!
